Its history began as a “place of delights” created by the Milanese Cardinal Angelo Maria Durini at the end of the 18th century. Its last owner, the explorer Guido Monzino, transformed its interiors into a sort of house-museum where he gave space to his art collection and relics from his alpine and polar expeditions. Monzino arranged that upon his death, which took place in 1988, the building and the surrounding green areas would pass to the FAI, the Italian Environmental Fund.
Director George Lucas chose it as a timeless location for the most romantic scenes of the second episode of Star Wars. But the villa had already merited other appearances in film history, such as those of Mario Soldati (Past Times, 1941), John Irvin (A Month at the Lake, 1995) and Martin Campbell (Casino Royale, 2006).
