Civil wedding

All weddings have to be realized near French civil authorities before being celebrated at church or before holding any symbolic ceremony, if you want the wedding to be legal. The mayor can authorize one of the councilmen to celebrate the union in the city or village in which one of the members of the couple has lived for at least 40 days before the wedding.

Religious Wedding

The religious ceremony has to take place after the civil ceremony. The priest or minister will ask for the civil wedding certificate before starting to organize any type of religious ceremony.

Wedding Certificate

Married couples in France receive a “livret de famille”. This booklet is used as an official register for the wedding and the following events in the family, such as births, deaths or divorces. You can obtain a wedding certificate by writing to the municipality in which the wedding took place.
